The Dark Room
A few weeks ago, my friend Mark Rivlin invited me to an open-mic comedy gig in Dalston where he was performing. What I thought was going to be a night of shooting Mark’s five-minute set turned into a wonderful night of shooting 15 comics in the dark. Initially I told Mark my photos are going to be black and white and very grainy, I use an old Digital Leica M9 which has a poor ISO performance and anything above 800 starts getting grainy so black and white being more forgiving was my choice for the evening. My biggest surprise was I actually really enjoyed the colour files, in fact I think I preferred them. Comedy promoter Alfie Noakes has been running the We Are Funny project in Dalston for a few years and the night I did the shooting was one of the last gigs of the show under him. As always when shooting performing artists I asked for the comics’ permission.
